Slovenia has many beautiful sights, just like many other European countries. To stand out, we need to highlight something unique about Slovenia that will place it at the top of tourists' wishlists. That’s why we’ve elevated Slovenia as the 'European Country of Love,' and history backs us up! Love requires two— and in Slovenia love is celebrated on two different days. In addition to Valentine's Day, Slovenia also celebrates Gregorjevo on March 12. Slovenians say that on this day, birds get married, and spring begins. According to old Slovenian folk custom, young maidens were watching the sky and the first bird they saw predicted the type of their future husband. Our poster shows a direct view of one of those maidens gazing at the sky, waiting for a sign. We’ve sent her a Kentish Plover, a bird with an important message: It doesn’t matter who our future partner will be. The only “type of husband” we need is the one who will love us. And what better bird to symbolize this than the one whose name includes “love”? In fact, plovers are iconic in Slovenia as they were also featured in the 'Birds of Slovenia' stamp series reprinted in 2018. In short, we want to invite all Lovebirds to fly to Slovenia and find their love nest here! We capture this message visually by using birds that resemble airplanes, with their movement symbolizing the lines left behind by planes. So come and feel love in Slovenia!
