There are about 1.7% of intersex people around the globe and more than 2 million in Russia only. Neither however intersex people themselves, nor the society know this. It is classified as «disease» or «abnormality». Intersex people undergo painful surgeries, which lead to disability. They suffer from severe psychological and social problems and don’t know where to appeal to. Association of Russian-Speaking Intersex (ARSI) is a non-governmental organization founded in 2013. Its mission is to make intersex lives better by protecting their rights, raising public awareness and providing them with sufficient information, as well as psychological, legal, and other support.
