Gabriela Alvarez Minte is the Regional Gender Advisor for the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Eastern Europe and Central Asia, a position she has held since January 2021. She is an international development practitioner specializing in gender and development, with over 20 years of experience in the international cooperation system across Latin America, Eastern Europe and Central Asia, and globally. Her work focuses on women's empowerment, gender norms, and the promotion and protection of the rights of women and girls. Prior to her role at UNFPA, her experience includes: Program Development Specialist focusing on gender justice at Oxfam International; Programme Manager for the violence against women portfolio at UNDP; Senior Consultant for UNICEF and UN Women; Associate Tutor at Birkbeck, University of London, across courses related to development. Various positions in violence prevention and gender equality. Gabriela Alvarez Minte holds a PhD in Development from Birkbeck, University of London, a Master's in Sociology from the University of Oxford (Green Templeton College), and degrees in Social Anthropology from Universidad de Chile. She has also published academic papers and been a guest lecturer in international academic seminars.
