It just takes a tap
Creative idea
Mastercard spent decades liberating travelers from exchange booths. In 1985 obtaining local currency abroad via the recently acquired Cirrus ATMs was a major breakthrough. Still, travel remained inherently heavy. Exploring a new city meant hauling around folded paper maps, thick dictionaries or phrasebooks, and wads of cash just to survive the day. Today, Mastercard takes that historic legacy a step further: shifting from giving you local currency to removing physical travel friction altogether. This campaign bridges Mastercard’s heritage with its modern vision. We contrast the cluttered, black-and-white reality of vintage travel preparation against today’s vibrant, hands-free moments of discovery and experience. The goal is to show how contactless payments eliminate physical baggage and mental overload. By placing a black-and-white window of 1980s travel gear with folded maps, heavy wallets, paper guides directly into a modern, full-color Parisian scene, we demonstrate that a single tap strips away the clutter. Paying disappears so you can travel light, stay present, and live the experience. On the poster we see a couple enjoying coffee by the Eiffel Tower. Their table is full of coffee and pastries, while we see the contrast of how reality was for travelers back in 1985. A black-and-white insert displays all the table clutter from then, including paper maps, coins, and guidebooks. It is framed against today’s effortless tap-and-go reality. The message bridges Mastercard’s history with its modern vision. In 1985, Mastercard gave you access to local currency. Today, it gives you access to the world effortlessly. It just takes a tap.
