The Travel Ritual

Creative idea

When people travel, they suddenly become very serious about very unserious rituals. They toss coins into fountains, turning loose change into a promise of something more. They touch statues, noses, feet and shiny parts of monuments because someone, somewhere, decided it brings luck. They take the classic “I was here” photo — holding up, leaning on or saving a landmark by attempting to place their hands perfectly. These gestures are funny because they are oddly specific, a little irrational and instantly recognizable. They are the things people do to make a trip feel official — part habit, part superstition, part proof for the camera roll. Mastercard has its modern travel ritual: the tap. Unlike a coin tossed into water, a lucky statue touch or a staged tourist pose, a Mastercard tap does not just hope for the best. It makes things happen. It gives travellers the confidence to move through a city freely, knowing they can pay simply and securely. The campaign is built as a series of 3 posters, turning familiar travel behaviours into a humorous visual system that contrasts tourist rituals with the practical power of one tap. The humour comes from treating these habits with a straight face while revealing Mastercard as the more reliable ritual. The brand is not trying to be the hero — it simply appears as the reason the next experience can happen. Visually, the campaign avoids polished travel advertising. Instead, it uses a low-fi, imperfect, Gen Z-friendly visual language — like a found camera-roll photo or a travel meme. The images feel familiar, spontaneous and awkward, making the idea more human, shareable and unexpected for a payment brand. Every city has its own rituals, lucky objects, fountains, monuments and tourist behaviours, allowing the campaign to travel from place to place while keeping one simple thought at its core: The world is full of rituals. With Mastercard, it is one tap away.
